Saint-Émilion Day Trip

Saint-Émilion is the day trip I send people on most, a medieval village built into limestone hillsides about half an hour from Bordeaux by direct train, surrounded by some of the most famous vineyards in the world. We take the train out together, so nobody has to think about driving or parking.

Once we are there, we walk the village itself, its steep lanes and stone houses, and go down into the underground monolithic church carved directly into the rock, said to be the largest of its kind in Europe. Later we visit a family run wine estate nearby for a proper tasting, the kind where someone actually explains what you are drinking rather than pouring and moving on.

It is a full day rather than a quick add on, and I keep it that way on purpose, since rushing Saint-Émilion into a couple of hours does not really do it justice.

What's included

  • Return train tickets from Bordeaux
  • A guided walk through the village and its underground monolithic church
  • A visit and tasting at one family run wine estate

Good to know

Duration
About 8 hours, including the train
Schedule
By arrangement, a few days notice helps
Meeting point
Shared with you when you book

Lunch in the village is not included, since everyone has different tastes and budgets, and I am happy to point you toward somewhere good once we are there. The village itself is steep and cobbled in places, worth knowing if walking on uneven ground is difficult for anyone in your group. If I am already guiding in Bordeaux that day, one of the local guides I know and trust personally will lead this instead, briefed exactly the way I would do it myself.
