1453: The Last Cargo, a Treasure Hunt

A team treasure hunt through the old town with sealed envelopes, a padlocked chest and seven real stories, finishing with coffee and canelés. No meal, no wine, all ages.

It is the summer of 1453. The French army is a few days from Bordeaux and the last English wine fleet sails tonight. You and your team are a merchant house racing two rival houses for the final cargo. That is the game. Everything you learn on the way is real: this city was English for three centuries, and the year on the padlock is the year it stopped being so.

We start at the Monument aux Girondins and work through seven stops in the old town, with a sealed envelope to open at each one. You will count the statues on the Grand Théâtre, hunt for three carved faces on Place de la Bourse, decode the trade names hidden in the streets of Saint-Pierre, read the date on Porte Cailhau, find the leopard on top of the Grosse Cloche and bet on the weight of its bell. Hints exist, but each one costs a coin, and unspent coins count at the end. Between the envelopes I tell you what actually happened in each place, which is the part people remember.

The four digits you collect open a wooden chest I carry in my satchel. Inside are the canelés, and we sit down for coffee on a terrace by the cathedral to count the barrels, hand out the certificate and let the losing team pay their forfeit. I built this one because I wanted something families, friends and colleagues could do together without a restaurant booking, which also means it runs every day of the week, Sundays included.

Good to know

Duration
2 hours 30
Schedule
Every day, departures at 10:00 and 15:00
Meeting point
At the foot of the Monument aux Girondins, Place des Quinconces

The game needs at least 4 people to form teams and works best between 6 and 12. Children from 7 are very welcome with an adult on their team, and there is no alcohol anywhere in it. The route is flat apart from a few hundred metres of cobbles in Saint-Pierre. Bring a phone with WhatsApp for the photo challenges. We play in light rain, and I cancel two hours before if the forecast is heavy, with a full refund or a new date.
